SUMMARY:Vaccination in the Immunocompromised Patient
DESCRIPTION:This comprehensive\, evidence-based course will give you the
confidence to safely vaccinate immunocompromised individuals. Click ‘

n\n\n\nAbout\n\n\n\nVaccination is a cornerstone of public health\, offe
ring crucial protection against preventable infectious diseases. For imm
unocompromised individuals\, whose immune systems are weakened due to un
derlying conditions or medical treatments\, the importance of vaccinatio
n becomes even more pronounced.\n\n\n\nThe aim of this program is to pro
vide a comprehensive overview of vaccination in the context of immunocom
promised states\, exploring both the science and clinical application of
immunisation and to provide guidance for healthcare professions treatin
g and managing this high-risk group of individuals.\n\n\n\nWe will begin
by reviewing the importance of vaccination\, particularly in reducing t
he heightened risk of infection\, exacerbation of underlying diseases\,
treatment\, and morbidity and mortality. We will look at the basic mecha
nisms and types of vaccines and provide guidance and recommendations for
vaccination in immunocompromised patients.\n\n\n\nSpecial attention wil
l be given to the timing of vaccinations and the need for booster doses
to ensure sustained immunity. We’ll delve into various immunocompromis
ed states—ranging from primary immune deficiencies to conditions such
as diabetes\, HIV/AIDS\, and treatments like chemotherapy and cellular t
herapy—to understand how these factors influence vaccination approache
s.\n\n\n\nThrough this module\, you will gain familiarity with current n
ational guidelines and recommendations from authorities such as the TGA\
, ATAGI\, NIP\, and AIH\, focusing on appropriate vaccine selection and
scheduling for immunocompromised individuals. We'll also address how vac
cine efficacy may differ in this group\, alongside contraindications rel
ated to specific vaccines\, including live attenuated formulations.\n\n\
n\nLastly\, we’ll explore safety considerations\, potential side effec
ts\, and the importance of post-vaccination monitoring.\n\n\n\nBy the en
d of this module\, you will be equipped with the knowledge and tools nee
ded to make informed\, evidence-based vaccination decisions for immunoco
mpromised patients\, to optimise protection for the patients and minimis
e risk caused by infectious diseases outlined in this program.\n\n\n\nLe
arning Objectives\n\n\n\n\nReview the importance of vaccination: increas
ed risk of infection\, exacerbation of the underlying disease\, required
  intensive treatment\, hospitalisation and death\n\n\n\n\n\nReview the b
asic mechanisms and types of vaccines\n\n\n\n\n\nReview the importance o
f vaccination timing and the need for boosters\n\n\n\n\n\nUnderstand Imm
unocompromised states including common conditions and treatments\, e.g.\
 , primary immune deficiencies\, chemotherapy\, post cellular therapy\, a
nd chronic medical conditions such as solid tumour cancers\, diabetes an
d HIV/AIDS\n\n\n\n\n\nVaccination recommendations: identify which vaccin
es are recommended for immunocompromised patients (TGA\, ATAGI\, NIP\, A
IH) and the appropriate timing for vaccination\n\n\n\n\n\nAssessing vacc
ine efficacy: explain how the immune response to vaccines may differ in
immunocompromised individuals compared to the general population\n\n\n\n
\n\nContraindications: highlight common contraindications and for specif
ic vaccines in immunocompromised individuals\, including inactivated and
live attenuated vaccines\n\n\n\n\n\nSafety and monitoring: discuss safe
ty considerations and potential side effects of vaccinations in this pop
ulation\, as well as the importance of monitoring after vaccination\n\n\
n\n\n\nReview patient cases and put the learnings into practice\n\n\n\n\
nFaculty Reviewers\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Paul Griffin▼\nAn Infectious Dis
eases Physician and Clinical Microbiologist\, Professor Paul Griffin was
appointed as the Director of Infectious Diseases at Mater Health Servic
es in 2013\, and most recently\, to his conjoint role as Head of the Mat
er Clinical Unit for the University of Queensland School of Medicine.&nb
sp\;\n\n\n\nPaul is an accomplished clinical trial investigator\, having
fulfilled the role of Principal Investigator in over 150 clinical trial
 s\, particularly in Infectious Diseases including 8 COVID-19 vaccines.&n
bsp\;\n\n\n\nDespite an already demanding role at the Mater\, Paul conti
nues as a member of the AMA Queensland Council 2023-2024\, and as board
member and scientific advisory board member of the Immunisation Coalitio
n\, with active interest in vaccine education and advocacy\, becoming a
trusted media authority and spokesperson across the nation during the CO
 VID-19 pandemic.\n\n\n\n\nAngela Newbound▼\nAn Immunisation Education
Consultant based in South Australia and a member of the Immunisation Coa
lition.\n\n\n\nAngela has been involved in immunisation program delivery
in South Australia&nbsp\;for over 24 years\, originally as an immunisat
ion provider\, and then&nbsp\;in program coordinator roles within the Di
visions of General Practice\, SA Health Immunisation Section\, the Medic
are Local Network and the Primary Health Network until December 2024 in
which she&nbsp\;provided clinical advice\, support and education to a wi
 de range of immunisation providers.\n\n\n\n\nRebecca James▼\nRebecca i
s a clinical nurse in Cancer Outpatients at the Royal Adelaide Hospital
(RAH) and has worked across cancer wards\, radiotherapy\, cancer day cen
tre and clinics over the last 12 years.\n\n\n\nRebecca graduated from th
e University of South Australia in 2011 and then completed a Graduate Ce
rtificate in Cancer Nursing with University of Tasmania and a Certificat

cca works with a small team of highly skilled cancer nurses assisting in
the management of cancer side effects\, supportive therapies\, chemothe
rapy and post stem cell transplant vaccinations. \n\n\n\nShe has an inte
